TRUE STORY: MR PHILLIP MISSED A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY
Mr Phillip retired from a top Nigeria telecom company after thirty-five years without having a piece of earth named after him apart from the six feet allocated to him at the cemetery in Victoria Island, after a brief illness which was followed by an untimely death. What a world of regrets!
As the Senior Manager in a growing company, He had many opportunities to live a good life and things were going well for his family. He had a wife named Esther who worked as Director of Sales in a company located in the United Kingdom but resigned to become a full-time housewife after persuasion from her husband, and they were blessed with a son named Richard who was schooling in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United State of America. Mr Phillip travelled every three to four months to visit them.
Mr Phillip is a devoted Christian who offered monetary help to his church and he’s also one of the key financial contributors to church projects. He was such a treasure to the church members and the ministry.
To fit his rising profile as a top decision-maker in his company, he relocated from a 4 bedroom apartments at Ikeja to a duplex house in Victoria Island, Lagos where he was paying 6 million naira as house rent annually. When He entered the new apartment, there was an increase of well-wishers who came visiting frequently to greet the friendly Mr Phillip. Of course, these people know that there is no way you’d visit the philanthropist and wouldn’t end up smiling home no matter how little. The goodness either comes in cash or gift pack.
Unfortunately, he never accepted the offer of a good deal to invest in property in Nigeria that would maintain his lifestyle even after his retirement. Although, he received a lot of suggestions from friends and family advising him to venture into real estate yet Mr Phillip’s wouldn’t concur because his mindset was that the money He’s made would sustain his old age. Meanwhile, the major reason why he wouldn’t was because of the lies he’s heard about real estate investment especially in Nigeria and his secret plan of relocating to abroad ultimately.
Shortly after his retirement and having made his plan of relocating abroad ready, Mr Phillip developed high blood pressure and diabetes which finally led to a stroke and his illness drained his finances drastically. Since he could no longer pay for house rent, He got evicted and had to stay with his friend who advised him to invest in real estate. His wife and son, who had come back from oversea stayed with her aunty and Richard was withdrawn from his school due to financial constraint. Within a short time of illness, life became miserable, nasty and short.
On his hospital bed, He called his family and apologized for bringing misfortune to them due to his negligence, inflexibility and obstinacy. Now, he realized he had been deceived by the glitz of office and the superficial applaud of people. With a tone of regret, He told his son never to make the mistake he’s made in life. He should invest in real estate because assuming he did some years ago, their life wouldn’t have turned out this way. After saying these words, He gave up the ghost and was buried at Victoria Vault, Victoria Island, Lagos with a befitting burial.
